Christian Surfers United Kingdom

Jesus Surf Classic Part 2 sees sun and surf for second attempt

The weekend of October 17th and 18th was a huge challenge for Christian Surfers UK, as they were holding both of the ‘Jesus Surf Series’ events on the same weekend around 60 miles apart ( Croyde and Polzeath ).

With well over 160 competitors of the UK’s top competitors, the surfing this weekend was always going to be

of the highest calibre.

For more details of the highly successful ‘Jesus Longboard Series’ this will be covered in full in a story to follow.

The week running up to the Jesus Surf Series Classic Part 2 saw some fantastic swell pushing into Croyde Bay, so expectations were high for the second part to the Jesus Surf Classic 2009. By the time Saturday came the swell had dropped but the sets where still pretty consistent. With a smaller field of competitors left to run ( As three of the categories had been run on a previous weekend ) the decision was always going to be whether to finish on Saturday night or wait for the possibility of slightly better waves on Sunday.

As the waves kept on rolling through, the decision was taken to run the whole contest on Saturday. The sun was setting as the Open final entered the water, on a day which had seen some great action in challenging waves.

In part one of the Jesus Surf Classic during the weekend of September 12-13 Tassy Swallow took the women’s under 18, Patrick Daniel took the Cadet title and Harry de Roth won the Youth division.

With some of the traditional top names in UK surfing scene not making an appearance this year , due to the date change, the title was wide open. The sun shone all day, and as the tide pushed in the sets were consistent, but the small conditions were always going to be a challenge.

The Juniors were the first in the water and made the most of the small conditions, with Woolacombes Stuart Campbell, who was the stand out of the contest taking the Junior title. Toby Donachie was second, with Newquays George Picking and Josh Piper taking third and fourth.
With some of the top ladies choosing to compete in the students, there was an opportunity for a new name on the very large women’s trophy.

Despite a stand out performance in the semi finals from Zoe Sheath, it was Tassy Swallow who took the win. A great performance from Jemima Knight saw her take second, Zoe Sheath came third and new comer, Allyssa Podessa ( Porthcawl ) came in fourth.

The Masters final, was taken clearly by Bideford's Michael Plackett, with Simon Twitchen coming in second after some consistent surfing. Paul Barlow and Craig Burrows struggled to find the better waves taking third and fourth.

The Open title was wide open this year and it was the younger guys that came out on top. As well as taking the junior title, Stuart Campbell made it a double by winning the open after some great surfing throughout the contest. Josh Piper struggled to back up a great wave, coming in second, closely followed by Toby Donachie in Third. After some blistering surfing in the quarters and semis Gary Wells came unstuck in final and finished fourth.

Throughout the weekend at both of the ‘Jesus’ series events, funds were being raised to support the work of ‘Shelterbox’ and ‘Holidays with a purpose’ as they continue to assist the areas so desperately affected by the recent Tsunami in Somoa, and earthquake in Sumatra, leaving thousands dead and tens of thousands in need of shelter and medical assistance.

For a full report of the 3rd Jesus Longboard Classic, see other press release, but it was a very successful contest with over 80 entries, held at the Tubestation in Polzeath.

The main winners were :
Open Longboard – Ben Skinner Women’s Longboard – Dominique Kent
Masters - Mark Goodwright Junior Longboard – Mike Lay

Christian Surfers UK would like to thank in particular all the Christian Surfers volunteers from around the country, Parkdene Holidays, Baggy Surf Lodge, the RNLI, the surfers of Croyde for sharing the waves during the weekend, and God for again providing the small but consistent waves, which saw the event completed in the evening sunset.

Testemunho: Renato Galvão, Surfista Profissional

Foto: Marcelo Bicudo

“I’m feeling very excited because the fans here twisted a lot for me, not only now in the end, but every day. I love Guaruja so I am very happy with this result and with this crowd on the beach. The final was incredible, Patrick is such a good surfer and I just wanna Thanks God for the final and for this great event here in Guaruja” said Galvao, who also commented about his goals for this end of season after his victory at Local Motion Guaruja Surf Pro.

Quiksilver Pro France 2009

Abe Andrews, chaplain to the ASP pro surfers, reports, "This was a really productive event, God provided us with many opportunities to provide a supportive service for the surfers and their families.

A few of the surfers could not take boards on their flight from LA to France because some airlines were refusing to take boards.

So, he got to transport surfboards for surfers from California to France, by train, bus and plane, which opened awesome doors with the surfers over the event.

Additionally he did a bit of filming and caddying for some of the guys which is always a really rewarding service for myself as the chaplain.

Lize connected well with the girls and she has been able to provide support to the families on the tour.

Lize helped look after the surfer’s kids and sat with the nervous wives and girlfriends as their other-halves competed in tricky conditions".

  • Pray for Abe and Lize as they travel on to the next comp at Mundaka, Spain, in coming weeks.

Estamos presentes em quase todos os estados no litoral Brasileiro e em diversos picos espalhados pelo Globo;

Walking On Water Japanese Surfing Missions

Mark 16:15
He said to them, ”Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people.

Toshiro Oyama has been in Southern California since February 2008 spending his time ministering to Japanese Surfers. One of the ways he does this is by passing out free copies of Noah’s Arc, The Outsiders and Changes.

All of these DVD’s are produced by Walking On Water and include incredible surfing, the gospel message and Japanese subtitles.

He has also had the incredible opportunity to be a surf tour guide for traveling Japanese Surfers. This has enabled him more opportunities to share the love of Jesus with the lost.

He's still planning a mission trip to Japan with the founder and Director of Walking On Water, Bryan Jennings.

He has a plan to premiere his new film Walking On Water in five major cities!

This mission trip is extremely important because less than one 1% of Japan’s population is Christian.

There are many religions in Japan that have come along with current times but most follow Shintõ or Buddhism.

Most Japanese people do not identify as exclusively belonging to just one religion, but incorporate features of both religions into their daily lives in a process known as syncretism. Shinto and Buddhism are even taken to as being interwoven in the country.

According to the real CIA World Fact Book 84% to 96% adhere to Shinto and Buddhism while 4% to 16% of the demographic population adhere to other religions or non-religious, atheist groups.

The majority of Japanese(70-80%) carry on the rolls of one or more religious body, but do not consider themselves believers in any religion.

There are actually more surfers in Japan then there are believers in Jesus! What a time to be a surfing missionary.

This will be his 5th annual trip as a Walking On Water missionary. Each year he has worked alongside Walking On Water’s Director of Missions, Todd Morehead, who has affirmed in him God’s gifting on his life as an evangelist.

Every year God gives him the opportunity to lead Japanese surfers to the Lord! He loves to share with them the love of Jesus, especially since they have most likely never heard the message!

He has moved to Irvine where he has started a home church and meet every Saturday for a service and Bible study which he prepares a lesson and teach.

On Thursdays he meets for a prayer meeting in his apartment. In the Irvine area there are many Japanese in the community giving him more opportunities to share Jesus with his people.

Some exciting news is that he had the opportunity to meet a Japanese surfer while surfing.

Boys accepts Lord Jesus....Praise GOD!!

He then ran into him randomly at a Japanese supermarket where he was able to invite him to his surfing fellowship and then he laters came to the Bible study.

Tosh & Taka

It was at the Bible study where he gave his life to the Lord! He had a Japanese/English Bible, but had never accepted Jesus into his life.

It was a neat experience to share with him Romans 10:9-10 'If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved. For it is by our faith that we are put right with God; it is by our confession that we are saved.’

His hearts desire is to focus on mission work, but in order to do so he needs support both financially and prayerfully.

If you feel led to give towards his ongoing ministry to Japanese surfers he would be so grateful for your partnership.

Please make checks payable to Walking On Water and send all donations to:

*Please write ‘Toshi’ in the memo. All donations are tax deductible.

Toshiro Oyama
