Surf competition: JESUS PRO AM (Australia)

The Jesus Pro Am is a professional/amateur surf competition run by Christian Surfers Australia.


The 2010 Jesus Pro Am Series, presented by Network Communications and Coastalwatch, will kick off on the Gold Coast for the first time in it's 26 year history.

Jesus Pro Am has become a favoured surfing event on the calendar for many of Australia’s best surfers.


Our aim is to provide a professional ran competition, which blesses the surfers, spectators & builds into the local surfing community.

Open Mens & Womens Divisions

With a total prize pool of $4000 and $1000 cash for first place in both the opens mens and womens up for grabs, plus series points (series winner will walk away with a surf holiday at Samoa), this popular contest is sure to fill up fast with only limited places in both opens and cadets divisions.

CADETS 16 & Under Boys And 16 & Under Girls Divisions

With a total prize pool of $4000 and $500 cash for first place in both the 16 & under boys and 16 & under girls up for grabs, plus series points, this popular contest is sure to fill up fast with only limited places in both opens and cadets divisions. To enter the 16 & under boys and girls divisions, competitor must have been born in 1994 or later.

*Also, 3 Cadets will be chosen by MISFIT surfboards to be given a chance to score a board sponsorship deal. 3 Cadets will be asked to come to the Cronulla event to be involved in an expression session with 1 Cadet walking away with a board sponsorship deal from MISFIT surfboards.

This popular series is the flagship event on the Christian Surfers Australia (CSA) calendar with volunteers coming from all over the country to ensure that the vibe on the beach is second to none.

In honour of Jesus who taught us to "love one another", and in partnership with local churches, CSA crew aim to make sure every spectator and competitor has a memorable experience and is buffed out with free hospitality (fair trade coffee & home made goodies) all weekend.

The Jesus Pro-Am is a surf competition run by Christian Surfers Australia;

presented by the Bible Society NSW and Coastalwatch.

The comp is a 3-part series (Manly, Coffs Harbour & Wollongong)

Manly: famous for ferry rides, the Corso, a buffet of international multiculturalism & the place to go for a gentle canter down the Esplanade, swiftly followed by an ice-cream.

In May 2009, the 3-part "JESUS PRO-AM" series kicked off at the uber metro Manly, drawing people from far (OTB - over the Bridge) & wide (a plethera of interstaters) to feast on a smorgasbord of surfing action, join in the community vibe & partake some of the infamous hospitality.

The Surf Report #42: Chaplaincy Update, Taiwan, Americas Conference, Europe Conference, ISA World Games, Mexico Contest Outreach

Chaplaincy Update

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) approved chaplaincy to be part of its structure after our one-year trial in which 18 chaplains were mobilized to over 30 events. In addition, a men's world tour chaplain, Abe Andrews, and a women's world tour chaplain, Liselle Wilsnagh, were appointed and presented to the Surfers. Abe is 27 married, been a high school chaplain, current gold coast CS mission leaders and member of Beachside Surf Church. Liselle is 31, single, South African, a professional singer, has been in CS 15 years, and is currently worship leader in Goleta Vineyard Church, Santa Barbara, USA. Pray for them as they serve at their next event in Tahiti. Regional chaplains are being sought with Lyle Castellaw for North America, Mike Stangel for Hawaii, and Andy Pitt for Africa already in place. CS Australia National Gathering

Australia just celebrated their 24th National Conference over Easter, rebranding it a 'gathering' to reflect it's grass roots down in Port Campbell, Victoria. 175 leaders and families turned up and Lena Johnstone spoke on 'Love one another and the world will know you are my disciples.' Awesome waves, weather, company and vision under a big top tent!



Taiwan!
Asia Regional Coordinator Ric visited new contacts in Taiwan and discovered a booming surf culture. With a YWAM missionary and former CSNZ couple a new mission is poised to launch - Chinese surf mission!



Walking on Water
WOW have partnered with CSI to roll out a world tour premiering their new film hoping to line up with world pro tour with destinations in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, Europe and more all planned. Contact WOW to join the tour.



Americas Conference
El Salvador hosts Americas conference July 23-27 for both North & South American surf mission leaders, all welcome. Contact Cal Fisher for more info.



Europe Conference
June 5-7 are the dates for key European surf ministry leaders in Hossegor, France. Contact Phil Williams to see if you are eligible to attend. Limited to key leaders and contacts.



ISA World Games
Costa Rica hosts the world ISA surfing games. New National Director Cokey has already been appointed chaplain of their national team and is seeking a global team to practice hospitality to the games via a CS stall. Cost $US1500 pp for 2 weeks inclusive and covers stall costs. Contact Cokey on cscrdirector@gmail.com. If you would like to help finance a Christian presence at the ISA games: $1500 stall fee, $500 stickers, $1000 Surfers Bibles, $2000 food and drinks. Mexico Contest Outreach

CS Mexico have a national contest coming to Puerto Escondido May 14-17. They have volunteered to help at this event by taking care of the beach cleanups. The organisers want to make it an eco-friendly event so CS will provide 8 sets of 3 bins in key locations along the beach area. One bin for plastics, one for organic materials, and one bin for non-organic rubbish. Each bin costs $30; each set will cost $90. All 24 will cost a total of $720. CS Mexico would like to provide these bins but don't have sufficient funds to do so. In each bin location they will be able to advertise CS and speak about Jesus. HEAVEN IN A HANDBAG

Whilst strolling around some local shops with a friend, we came across a handbag shop.
And there on a mirrored wall appeared the story of “The Handbag of Glory” …which went on to explain… “Such was the power of the Handbag of Glory, that ladies wept when they saw it and those who touched it went straight to Heaven.” This amused me no end; because for some of us girls, we understand the virtue of a good handbag!! As a young grom I didn’t care for such finery, adamant that my velcro men’s surf wallet was more than enough for me (girls surf merch didn’t exist back in my day!). Being quite the tomboy, it was ‘soft’ to carry around a pretty purse, let alone a handbag.

They were for kooks!! Then came the day, I progressed from girl-hood to woman-hood & got a handbag for Christmas. It was a black ’pleather’ (leather made from plastic) rectangular shaped, long strapped bag, that had a silver plate with some rather non-significant words typed on it.

A bit squeamish at the thought of breaking rank from my tough hardcore exterior (what a laugh!) & sauntering around with a handbag; I decided to give it a go. It initially felt awkward & fraudulent, but then this overwhelming sense of kinship came between us & thus I have gone from strength to strength in my career with handbags. The emerging theme is that they seem to get bigger, so I can fit more stuff in them! The story of the Handbag of Glory is hilarious. An urban parable of an unsaid phenomenon amongst us female folk.

The funny thing is that although we may have heavenly moments with handbags; my experience in understanding heaven was similar to that of handbags. I thought what I had in life would do. Who needs what you don’t know? I never really cared what ‘heaven’ meant, or how to get there. Hey, I was hardcore right!!?? I personally came to consider the concept of heaven when I thought of my own mortality. My insignificance in this big, big world & my lack of control to prevent fatal situations.

Sounds morbid, but I just had no hope or anything to latch onto, should anything serious go down! There is a story in the bible where a guy quizzically asks Jesus about life beyond &how to get there. Jesus answered “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father (who is in heaven) except through me” (John 14:6). Jesus gave the key, the address & left the front light on. It was Him. He was the way to heaven.

And as much as much as that handbag grew to have functional necessity in my life; so has heaven. I now have a place of hope, safety, assurance & security: & certainty of life beyond the present. No pleather handbag is ever getting me to heaven! ....but I know Jesus is not a fake, when it comes to that!!
